This ranks as one of my favorite photos from Cannon Beach, OR. It was taken a year ago this weekend by a nephew during a family gathering at this small seaside community. This picture is currently my computer's desktop image. (Click to enlarge!)
There are several things that I really like about this besides the drop-dead colors. I like looking at the setting sun knowing that somewhere over the horizon someone is looking up towards a rising sun. The tops of the clouds protruding above the horizon remind the Earth is round and, again, someone may be looking up at those clouds which are treating them to a fleeting, yet magnificent, sunrise.
And I love the scale lent to this photo by the lone beach walker (bottom left) probably out for an evening stroll. The Oregon coast is beautiful and always changing, but for a few brief moments a year ago this weekend, we existed on the canvas of a living painting!

Great Photo! Haystack Rock must be in your collection, too. We lived in Portland for seven years, 86-93, and went to the Oregon beaches as often as we could. Lincoln Beach, Seaside, Astoria are great northern Oregon ocean spots for a day's get away or longer. While I love the desert, the pacific northwest is such a great place. Every place has its own beauty -- all you have to do is look for it.
Beautiful! I like the way the clouds decided to part at the exact right moment for the last rays of the sun.
Round Earth "Theory" proved by tops of clouds? You just know the stoopidbigcircustentsociety (aka show the instruments of torture to gallileo & see if he still says there are moons around jupiter) of the 1500's would be saying it's only a ground fog phenomenon. perhaps foggy thinking also explains our current leaderofthefreeworld embracing 500-yr old philosophy. Did the flatearthers truly not see those sailing ships shortening as they crested the curve of the earth? perhaps these things are only truly visible from a gorgeous summertime oregon coast. ~~ D.K.
Ohhh nice. I just booked a weekend getaway yesterday for a S. Oregon beach trip. Can;t wait....
g.d.? - Oh, way to go. Will expect a brief report after your trip. (Just a sketch, lest I get desperately envious.~grin)
eprof: We lived in the Hillsboro area for two years in the early 70's. My first memory of Cannon Beach was during a visit to the men's room at the little pub there.
With nothing to do while one is standing there, I read the graffiti on the wall and I confess, it was the most intelligent restroom wall debate I ever read, anywhere. Great barbs, yet with much spirit and humor. Sadly, that's the only memory I have of my first visit to that beach, yet I left impressed.
really really beautiful...
