Thankfully my tech attendant, "AJ" -- somewhere on the other side of the Earth which just coincidentally is likely in the area for which the India Pale Ale I was drinking was named -- was most pleasant. I concluded AJ must be scripted for just such occasions when support dictates spending more time with a customer than most parents spend with their kids each day.
He asked, "How was your weekend?" I explained, being a three day weekend, it was great.
"It was a banking holiday, right?" AJ asserted, noting why it was special.
"Yes, exactly," I confirmed. "We have 10 of them every year. My favorite one being the last Banking Holiday of the year where family gets together and exchanges presents in our gratitude to banks and other industry's for giving us these holidays."
As I gave control of my computer cursor over to AJ somewhere in Asia, I yelled to Mrs. Dada in the next room to come see. "Look." Holding both arms above my head, "NO HANDS!" I excitedly proclaimed as the cursor moved miraculously about our desktop without me.
"How is your weather?" AJ wanted to know. I learned it was about as hot "there" as it was here and the "AC" in AJ's apartment was not working.
"Do you like cars?" he asked. "What kind?"
We both agreed we liked cars and I imagined AJ is looking forward to owning one some day when they eventually build roads for him to drive on. (Of course, they will have to ban the oxen from them.)
After three hours or so AJ returned control of my computer to me, sadly conceding he had failed. Had my problem been worse I'm sure I wouldn't have felt the tinge of satisfaction I experienced just then. That even technology gods fail sometimes!
AJ's recommendation? Try a different e-mail program, OR buy a new computer! I thanked him for his time and he for mine. I encouraged him--when he got off work--to go drink an India Pale Ale.

My experience with AJ highlighted my evening reflections of man's spreading condition towards increasingly more dismal levels of complexity.
From tech support that collapsed, I listened to other stories on the news, like
But one has to love the irony. For as I sat watching AJ control my computer from the other side of the Earth, he listened as I told him I was drinking one of his India Pale Ales.
This morning I took one of AJ's recommendations. I bought a new computer. It'll ship in a couple of weeks. As soon as they assemble all the parts from Japan, Taiwan, etc. Hopefully, they'll all work together and that will stave off my future need of tech support for awhile.
But why am I not too optimistic that in setting up the new system when it arrives, I won't need to visit with AJ again very soon?
From tech support that collapsed, I listened to other stories on the news, like
- U.S. violent crime is up. Reason? Gangs! But what can you expect from a nation that exports organized gangs to indiscriminately shoot up and destroy other countries?
- The spread of super bugs in the U.S. that are extremely resistant to any known treatment. Reason? Overcrowding of people in inner cities and prisons that promote their spread.
- Or take the TB infected man on a NO FLY list who flew at will endangering others, illustrating how successfully our Homeland Security fails us.
- The more and more contaminated foods not just unfit for cat and dog consumption, but being eaten by people too, illustrating how well our Agriculture and Food and Drug departments with their drastically slashed budgets protect us.
- Russia's new ICBM's incapable of being stopped by the U.S. anti-missile's boondoggle gift to defense contractor's program. It's just a response to the new arms race being triggered by aggressive U.S. policies.
But one has to love the irony. For as I sat watching AJ control my computer from the other side of the Earth, he listened as I told him I was drinking one of his India Pale Ales.

Be sure to turn in your old computer to Homeland Security, where they can thoroughly inspect it for TB bugs, or put it on the no-fly-list!
you know dada, I hate to admit it, but reading this & your previous post on Cindy, I think I've finally realized that the petri dish that contained the american experiment has bacillicized. ~~ D.K.
d.k.'s comment is precious...
and glad you're upgrading your technology -- i pray that you either bought a mac or didn't buy the Vista windoz operating system -- cuz if you got it shipped with your computer (vista that is) you'll be using AJ a lot!!

Communism is just the opposite."
OK, I want both of you to know that while you may think comments made here to postings I've made do not just "fly off into space"...to vanish in the void with all the other undetectable dark matter out there, that's not true.
Nay...today the dark matter contained in your comments scared the hell out of me so that by 3:30 or 4:00 I was having extreme second thoughts.
But I'm feeling much, much better now. That's because I called and cancelled the flippin' order. Thank you, thank you, thank you both.
Even though our four year old desktop almost daily gives up a little ground (today we lost access to Mozilla Firefox - I guess it's joined our e-mail program in the nether), I am retaking this opportunity to consider a Mac....or in lieu of that another laptop instead of the behemothic desktop.
We shall see. But right now, for the moment, I thank you both. I'm feeling very good about my decision and excited about whatever we finally decide to do.
BTW Raed...I always remove my "brains" on my old computer before doing anything drastic like turning it to Homeland Security. In fact, I think we should have a cookout on the back patio as I "beat my brains out" (that were formerly installed in our old HP.)
Now, I must ask...if you happen back here AZ and read this: Do you own a Mac?
Wow, I hope it was nothing *I* said. We've been thinking of upgrading & yes, that will require a stout hammer for commiting computercide on the old gear. I don't like what I've read about Windows Vista, either. I left a comment for AZ cuz I'd like to know more about Macs, too.
It's funny you only started having problems after installing new equip. I liked the way you bonded with AJ. Are you sure he said "banking holiday" and not "boinking holiday"??? You can see why that would make it "special". ~~ D.K.
psychomikeo: When I began my previous comment, yours wasn't on here. Apparently it took me so long to post that yours posted while I was still pecking at the keyboard.
So now I've noticed it and, at first, I scratched my head. Then I LMAO. Amen!
azgoddess here - yes i own a mac -- that's all i've ever owned...send me an email - both of you guys -- azgoddess1@yahoo.com
i also have worked in the computer industry for 20 years...all that time using a mac at home
and installing new software on old windoz systems never works...sorry to hear about firefox not working -- it's one hell of a program...
anyways...email me and ask away...questions that is...
I confess....for years now I've been curious about Macs. What with many of our old S/W programs no longer being compatible with the *new improved* Vista, one of the drawbacks of switching to a Mac has been greatly reduced.
If we're going to have to buy S/W anew, why not buy Mac compatible S/W and try something different?
No, it wasn't anything you said, DK, but thanks for saying it. I wonder if AZ's a Mac person...sure sounded like it, huh?
geezuz: when composing previous msg., I swear to you, your's was NOT there AZ....so, I'm asking a question you've already answered but I didn't know it.
Thanks for the e-mail address. I'm sure questions may arise. Now I'll know who to ask for answers.
Re Firefox not working any longer on old computer (it happened after an updating of the Firefox S/W!), I went and installed it on our laptop. After FF, I just can't get used to IE.
I guess it's time for my 2 cents :o)
Whenever you get rid of old PC's make sure your hard drive is cleaned. Use

(free) to erase all data. Banging your disk with a hammer is fun but does not make all data unrecoverable if somebody wants it bad enough.
MAC or Windows?
The website below tries to give an insight on what is better for you

Have fun!
El Aleman :o)
El Aleman:
I look forward to reading more on this site. In a quick scan, however, I note they are using Windows XP instead of Vista (which has me a bit nervous). But I shall see what they have to say. Thanks!
Stay away from vista for now! To fresh on the market. too many bugs. But Dell (just example, no endorsement) still sells systems with XP pro SP2 which should do you well!
El Aleman
BTW we should plan another beer tasting
Yes, you and AZ have made me sufficiently leery of Vista.
Also, I confess...the new computer ordered/cancelled was with Michael Dell (a great Bush supporter?) and that really didn't set well with me.
I mean, how can someone with such an astute business mind support a Bush and his destructive policies?
Oh, I forget, fuck his wars, it's all about "good business",isn't it?
Now, El Aleman, that last sentence re a beer tasting: Is that a "sign" we are on the verge of birthing another miraculous "Immaculate Concoction"?
