Scenic Sunday

Scenic Drive was bustling with joggers, cyclists and walkers on Sunday as they came
out to enjoy the city views from the road, without traffic. The city will close Scenic
Drive to vehicles from 6 a.m. to noon through Aug . (Vanessa Monsisvais/ El Paso Times)

I almost missed this photo on the front page of this morning's El Paso Times. Taken of yesterday's first "Scenic Sunday" (I guess they're not "Ciclovias" this year). It was a nice morning for walking and Mrs. Dada and I enjoyed the pleasant company of other members of her local peace group while walking up and down the liberated roadway.

The photo includes Mrs. Dada on the extreme right (with backpack) just as she was stepping out of the scene and yours truly in the white shirt just to the right of the young bicyclist in the foreground.

Dada, with front page coverage, you had better sign up with Britney Spears' publicity agent before your fame disappears. LOL!!!

DK, yes, if HD were speaking in the third person, su boca (his mouth) would be correct. I may be off on this one too but when I asked mi esposa about your comment, "I'm now wondering why phone calls are answered with "bueno"? might be conveying more info than intended!" she said folks are really saying "buenos" with an s as they have shortened buenos dias to simply buenos. On the other hand, maybe they're just "excited" about getting a phone call.

Have a great day everyone. I'll be on the road a lot today as the wife and I are taking her 93 year old mother way over to the other side of Phoenix in Sun City West for an eye operation as an out patient -- close to 200 miles round trip through some of the busiest freeways in AZ.

eprof2,

thanks for the explanation. I often speak in 3rd person on blogs. Helps me maintain the "Legion of Sr Horsedooty". Good luck to your madre en ley on the eye surgery. Be careful driving as I have been on those very same freeways.

Well with gas rapidly appriaching $4 bucks a gallon, pedal power & gym shoes will become more popular entities. It's always nice when communities break away from *car mentality*. There is a big brawl brewing in Oregon over the use of motorized boats @ Waldo lake. It is a rare oligathrphic (super clarity by scientifitic standards) lake only a hanful worldwide. Some idiot started a forest fire there that spread to quite a few acres. The Forest Circus sent in helicopters & planes to dump chemical fire retardent powder & accidentally dumped a bunch in the lake. Over the years there have been tussles over if it should be non motorized. The power motor people are trying to argue it is needed for handicapped access! Almost all the lakes & waterways in Oregon allow motors, so it would be sweet for canoe, kayak & other non motorized watercraft people to have a little sanctuary.
Give the lake a chance to recover from the fire retardant dump debacle. There is a rare, pristine lake- let's muck it up!

Here in Cowtown (FT Worth, TX) the popular attitude has always been that "if it is old, it is no good, so lets tear it down and build something new". Actually, that attitude is changing a little but there used to be 5 great big turn of the 20th century Victorian looking houses that belonged to the great ranching and oil families from years ago, up on one of the higher hills that look west from the downtown area. Now there is one left and it is an office building. The rest were torn down and they were replaced with a big parking lot for a church that had bought them up. Now that lot is used only one day a week now. The Junior League bought the biggest house of that style that was a few miles away. They had re-done and it is now an income producing structure for their charities. They rent out the rooms for parties and the like. So, I understand the problems like that, Fran.
