I don't watch Oprah Winfrey. Ever. Really. I don't know why I feel compelled to disclaim that. Probably for the same reason everyone who was against the Iraq war always had to begin with the disclaimer, "We all know what a bad asshole of a man Saddam is but...." then went on to explain why attacking Iraq was a bad idea.
Anyway, I have a TIVOless wife who checks for upcoming programs on TV. She spotted Michael Moore was scheduled to be on Oprah's one day late last week. Her show was to be on health care in America. A definite must see, I thought.
I will always go out of my way to catch Moore. But news of his appearance on Oprah's came less than 24 hours after I learned some shocking news about Moore. That was when my wife's latest issue of her PETA magazine arrived.
It was there we read Moore's rant against animal rights activists where he declared the movement "makes me want to kick my dog." The magazine goes on to say, "He once sent a crew of people to protest outside PETA's headquarters, complete with signs reading, 'You are wasting your lives' while unforgivably dragging a group of hot miserable animals along with them."
Oprah's 60 minute program on U.S. healthcare was excellent. Michael Moore did not disappoint. But it's all relative, I suppose.
I suspect we may all be here on a journey for greater enlightment. May you, I, and Michael Moore not waste our time or miss the opportunity!
My editor Sam. Let's all "go kick our dogs!" M. Moore sentiment

hello my friend...
michael is an interesting character - he has the ability to do so much good in this world...and with the wrong choices - do a whole lot of bad...
let's just hope that in the future he will see 'light'
did you see his new, relative speaking - movie?
MM's still a hero. I don't have to (and often don't) agree with everything he says. Sorry I missed him on Oprah (which I've never watched either, although I have a sister who quotes her to me so often that I feel like I do!).
I don't think MM would stand much of chance trying to kick Sam. He looks far too alert -- was someone showing him a ball? Besides, Mr/Mrs Dada would probably tackle him before he could even connect, right? I now know I will not be bringing any of my dogs to see MM speak, if he ever makes it back to utah (he wasn't too well rec'd last time, as chronicled in "This Divided State").
hmmm, I never thought of a brain as a "cage"!?! ps, did you realize you posted this twice? It's also down with 9/28. ~~ D.K.
Hmm, I would not have expected him to make that remark. There is a widespread spectrum of PETA folks. Some want ethical treatment of animals, and want ethical behavior & treatment all around. They can peacefully protest, they can unite & inform, vote with their dollars & not buy products from questionable or known animal abuse companies.
There are also fringe groups who throw red paint (representing blood) on fur or leather wearers. Or worse those who would break into a lab & release test animals who may have been injected w deadly diseases. Setting them free, without knowing they just released deadly diseases. Others feel compelled to burn down lab facilities.
I'm guessing you are in the peaceful group, wanting to be enlightened and enlighten others without the violent crime element. So you'd have to nail down what kind of PETA folks you are talking about. In either case, it still would not justify the "kick the dog" remark, unless he was just being ornery or contentious or it is possible he was quoted out of context.
The only thing I struggle with re PETA is some of the vaccines we use that eradicated deadly diseases were tested on animals. Polio, and Small Pox are a few that were around not that long ago. My husband's Mother spent her adult life in a wheelchair due to polio, so it was a major life changing disease.
In any case, Editor Sam is *such a cuuute doggy* who could even think about kicking his kind?
az: Yes, we saw his movie. Did you catch it? Excellent. Wake up America!
d.k. - Thanks for reminding me this post was here twice. I'd intended to delete the earlier one, but got distracted.--Thanks!
g.d. - Yes, as with all loose collection of groups sharing similar beliefs, goals and the way to achieve them, their is a wide array of those advocating how to do that. Like radical Earth Firsters in the environmental movement to their more innocuous conservative counterparts, Sierra Clubbers.
In the animal rights movement, the more conservative would certainly condemn breaking into a lab & releasing test animals who may have been injected with deadly diseases. (Is this something PETA did? Or some fringe group acting on their behalf? I don't know.) The more radical group would say, "Who the hell asked the animals if they minded being infected with human diseases?
While not myself a member of PETA, I guess I'd fall somewhere in between, i.e., I think a little red paint on the sable wearing opulence delusionaries is not a bad thing.
