Edfou, Upper Egypt by David Roberts, 1840
"When we in the West saw the ancient, yet magnificent ruins of the Middle East for the first time as they emerged from the easels of painter David Roberts, we at once knew we had to go there, to lay ruins to some more." (~an anonymous Frenchman)
Dada says, "Now, if we could just demand the same of Bush, Cheney, the whole stinkin' executive branch and both damn houses of the congress to go serve a year in Baghdad (or get their asses canned), I can't begin to imagine how U.S. policy might change. If nothing else, it'd be a great year for us left behind in the U.S with D.C. sans politicians."

As we are now told by Sue Pleming of Reuters, "Facing staff shortages in Iraq, the US State Department announced on Friday that diplomats would have no choice but to accept one-year postings in the hostile environment or face losing their jobs."Dada says, "Now, if we could just demand the same of Bush, Cheney, the whole stinkin' executive branch and both damn houses of the congress to go serve a year in Baghdad (or get their asses canned), I can't begin to imagine how U.S. policy might change. If nothing else, it'd be a great year for us left behind in the U.S with D.C. sans politicians."

Awww, are these diplomats going to have to tough it out in the new embassy? The 104 acre, heavily guarded compound? It is a a self-sufficient and “hardened” domain, to function in the midst of Baghdad power outages, water shortages. (they rerouted all water & power direct to the Embassy? sorry locals...) The compound has a swimming pool, gym, commissary, food court and American Club, all housed in a recreation building. Sounds like a little America right in the middle of Baghdad!
They were to begin using this facility in June of 2007. Nestled in the green zone & heavily fortified. I've always been in favor of Bush doing foot patrol in Iraq. Forget the fake photo ops, and no green zone for him. How long do you think he would last in the red zone?
Oh Fran...I was talking about life in the green zone...that Bush couldn't handle that. I can't even begin to imagine what would happen to the poor "frat-boy fart-boy" bully if they locked him outside the green in the red zone.
And while we're at it, how about a little Katrina Kosmic Karma were Bush to be roaming around in the red zone? Did you hear the following story today? (Wash. Post, MSNBC, etc.)
"the possibility of a catastrophic failure of the Mosul Dam has alarmed American officials, who have concluded that it could lead to as many as 500,000 civilian deaths by drowning Mosul under 65 feet of water and parts of Baghdad under 15 feet"
Of course, the others who would be flooded out of their homes or perish would just be Iraqis, people of color...oh wait, that sounds all so vaguely familiar....
