I'd like to take a minute to speak to our military now serving in Iraq. Obviously, I cannot begin to relate to or appreciate what you're experiencing. Honestly, my sentiments favor bringing you home. That may or may not be an option you embrace.
But the really important thing, deciding whether you stay or leave Iraq is now being seriously debated in the senate back here at home. Passionately at times. But senators are in a stalemate over what to do about Iraq and while your futures over there are up in the air, take heart. That's because I heard on tonight's news that as next fall's elections get nearer, some republicans who profess to be questioning your president's war (but can't yet bring themselves to vote with the opposition party to end it) may change their mind by next spring out of political expediency, i.e., their own reelections.
So with the next six months probably more of the same in Iraq, try to stay safe and out of harm's way. The game of politics can be extremely frustrating, particularly when you're being used as the game ball. I would dearly love for all of you to return home safely, but statistics tell us a goodly number of you won't.

What'd I hear Jon Stewart say tonight? Something like, our senate is so concerned about the war in iraq, they were even willing to forego a little sleep for one night!
Yet, even that little bit is more than the C'n'C is willing to do. Cold comfort for those guys walking the line. I sure hope you're right Dada, that some more repubs might be willing to break with bushnitwit soon, even if it IS only to protect their phony balony reelection. ~~ D.K.
And that's the sad fucking reality, isn't it? That these morals spouting Johns, these bribe takers and money launderers exhort their high minded idealisms while soldiers are getting their asses blown off for us.
But funny isn't it, that with 60-70% of citizens against the frickin' war, many of these democracy pimps with re-election facing them will suddenly "grow ears" next spring.
deke: addendum - in reading the above comment, it occurred to me. Blogging has greatly expanded my ability to better express myself.
I guess it wasn't all in vain, huh?
It occurs to me (perhaps I'm just hopelessly obtuse) that the officials who are currently hoping for reeelection are the brilliant politicians we have to thank for this mess in the first place. We all know who's really "driving the podium", and it ain't poor, blustering Bush.
Could it be that our memories are even poorer than I have hitherto suspected? If I'm knocked down and kicked in the face, I don't invite my assailant over for afternoon tea.
Perhaps the American public will wise up in the nedt few months, but we musn't count on anything.
