I wish sometimes I'd have paid better attention as a student back in my intro classes to psychology and biology during my junior college days, particularly in light of the important fact that many psychiatric disorders are genetic and can be passed down to successive generations.
Now let me just say, I believe our president's grandfather, Prescott Bush, was as mentally healthy as you, or I, or our president, George W. Bush. And that's what makes the following story so highly suspect as being reported by Mike Thomson on BBC radio.
Seems Thomson takes a document that "uncovers details of a planned coup in the USA in 1933 by a group of right-wing American businessmen" and investigates why it is so unknown to us here in this country. The cover for his story states:
"The coup was aimed at toppling President Franklin D. Roosevelt with the help of a half-a-million war veterans. The plotters, who were alleged to involve some of the most famous families in America..., believed that their country should adopt the policies of Hitler and Mussolini to beat the great depression. "
So this morning, while trying to dig into such outrageous claims without a lot of success and while looking at Thomson's credentials, I did come across the following on YouTube by another investigative reporter, John Buchanan, which supports this outrageous story.
If you forward to the 4:22 mark in the video you will hear his revelation of Prescott Bush's plotting with co-conspirators to assassinate FDR, set up concentration camps for U.S. citizens (and, if necessary, "exterminate" those) deemed unproductive, unemployed, or unworthy of the new America!
Obviously, Buchanan is way over the edge here, but as a purely mental exercise in imagining the Bush family in a parallel universe next door to ours, if such claims were true there, it's easy to feel the pride Pappy Prescott, if he were alive today, would feel for his grandson, little George W, accomplishing what Grand Dad was unable to.
And what makes it so remarkable is little Bush over in that parallel universe was able to accomplish a coup d'état with just a little defiance, lots of signing statements, and a submissive out-of-touch congress. He didn't even need a 500,000 man army!
Gads, I'm so glad we don't live in that parallel universe!

They asked to wrong guy to lead it
Smedley Darlington Butler (July 30, 1881 – June 21, 1940), nicknamed "The Fighting Quaker" and "Old Gimlet Eye," was a Major General in the U.S. Marine Corps and, at the time of his death, the most decorated Marine in U.S. history.
In 1934 Butler came forward and reported to the U.S. Congress that a group of wealthy pro-nazi industrialists had been plotting to overthrow the government of President Franklin D. Roosevelt in a right-wing military coup. Even though the congressional investigating committee corroborated most of the specifics of his testimony, no further action was taken.
