Everyone remembers where they were when they heard.....

....Captain America had been assassinated! For me, it was a day I'll never forget. At my favorite Mexican restaurant, pre-recorded mariachis were playing over a TV mounted high in a back corner above the bar. I was munching chips and soaking up suds when a cook hastened from the kitchen.

Turning the TV to CNN and raising its volume to a level now challenging the mariachis "El Milagro de Tus Ojos," I noticed the cook's reddened eyes. She was crying. Was it something she'd heard on the television or onions she had been dicing for the enchiladas? I got the idea we were about to find out.

I couldn't believe when next I heard the words uttered from the stunned lips of CNN's Kyra Phillips: "It's official, Captain America, ageless defender of our American way of life was officially pronounced dead at 12:51 EDT, gunned down on the steps outside a New York federal courthouse. A victim of an assassin's bullet."

Reaching for my cerveza, I knocked my festive Noche Buena into the guacamole. The room was suddenly filled with the sounds of dropping forks and gasping patrons throughout the restaurant.

No doubt, none of us will ever forget where we were and what we were doing the moment we heard the news. I know for me, I'll remember forever that mole sabroso.

Captain America on his way to his final rest, as ushered there by his solemn
pall bearers (to include Iron Man, the Black Panther, Ben Grim and Ms. Marvel).

And who can forget the legacy left us by our all-American hero, like this World War II photo where he was about to surprise der Führer with a knuckle nose sandwich?

Remarkably, a reporter known only as "Barb" from a small underground paper in Berkeley interviewed Mrs. America shortly after her husband's funeral. It was then his widow revealed the sad truth.

"'Cap' would never have fallen into the assassin's ambush if he had cared. But the sad truth is, Cappy really died several years ago when he lost his zeal for living, for defending all he believed America to be. Everything good, honorable. A shining beacon to a gloomy world."

"He never dreamed a nation for which he had given so much, had defended with his life, would become a symbol of oppression raining terror and hated upon the world. He died a broken, despondent man!" she sobbed almost inaudibly into the coffin's American flag she had been presented just moments earlier.

Plans are under way for Mrs. America to attend a White House ceremony later this month where she will receive a Medal of Freedom in honor of her late husband's heroics from an appreciative president Bush.

This just in: Scooter Libby will NOT serve jail time. Bush has issued him a commutation--A commutation is distinct from a pardon, which is a complete eradication of a conviction record -- making it the same as if the person has never been convicted.

Bush has only commuted the jail term which means that the conviction remains on Libby's record and he must still pay a $250,000 fine.
Chump change for rich oil tycoons, Eh?

Commutations are rarely granted. A commutation is a total right of the president and it cannot be challenged by any attorney or court, he said.

Ol' Scooter- will have to scrape by because George B sez: "The consequences of his felony conviction on his former life as a lawyer, public servant, and private citizen will be long-lasting," he said.

Let's all give a big boo-hoo & an awwww for Scooter (someone once said any adult that goes by the name of Scooter deserves to be jailed). Let me guess his pal, big dick is the REAL felon who leaked Plames identity. But made this favor happen for his fall guy pal.

But you'll sleep better tonight, knowing that Scooter can still appeal, AND be pardoned.
The commutation does nothing to prevent Libby from appealing his conviction. And if the appeal fails or is still in process at the end of Bush's term, there is nothing to prevent the President from granting Libby a full pardon before he leaves office.

Yes, the good ol' boys corrupt network is alive and well.

Will the history books describe this as the "teflon presidency"? Nothing sticks and a whole lot slides. Not shocking, but quite disgusting.

I bet Captain and Mrs America would be pissed off.

got democracy: Well, absolutely, the $250,000 fine that remains is nothing to these assholes. Hell, they'll have a barbeque for 'im and drop $20,000 checks in Scooter's hat like pennies and nickels. (Or Big Dick'll just take it out of his VP incidentals budget.)

That's why I chose to blog about the death of Captain America yesterday (and probably other lighter, fluffier, items in the days ahead) -- to maintain my sanity.

Tomorrow, to conserve lighter fluid in these days of declining oil production, I'll fire up the barbee with a couple of American flags instead, a tradition I began last year.

Interestingly, when asked how they were going to spend The Fourth, the woman of a couple we dined with yesterday said, totally out of the blue, "I think I'll burn an American flag."

Maybe the source for those flames of the Fourth are catching on? If so, I feel we only have the Bush Boys to thank.

My son commented that this is the "Sulpher Presidency"- Something stinks & it's rotten.

I on the other hand, I WILL be flying a flag on the 4th of July. A Peace flag, that is. The only way I fly the US flag these days is up-side-down, the official, flag etiquette symbol for distress.
Yes, this is a Nation in distress.

Have you noticed how difficult it is to find a US flag actually made in the USA? China has captured the US flag manufacturing market. Americans are patriotic, but they want a good deal- even if it comes from a communist country made by slave-like labor. Fly your flag & slap on a "Support the troops" magnetic car sticker on your rig-- all made in China, to show your deep patriotism.

Yes, this is a negative mindset. But we should be having a revolution in the streets over the lawless, reckless Bush admin. Are we really going to settle for Nancy Pelosi telling us Impeachment is off the table? Sure Nanc- whatever you say.

The best way I can make this positive is to add a link to a petition w 10 reasons to Impeach Bush & Cheney:

For the record, going off the deep end is NOT a part of the Check & Balance system, Congress is empowered with. What's that smell?
Something stinks & it's rotten.

hmmm Got Democracy got me thinking (dangerous, I know): I don't fly flags of any kind ever, so maybe a black armband? So many deaths to be thinking of: war dead, constitution death, rule of law death, cap'n america's death, america itself caput. I used to have a black panther arm band, but it disappeared in some move or other. hmmm, that gives me another idea ... somewhere online I saw an HST Gonzo armband, all black with stenciled raised fist. Too late for 7/4/07, but not a bad item to have in my wardrobe, eh? would give me a chance to engage (enrage?) any curious locals. ~~ D.K.

Captain American being buried and Libby being pardoned...an interesting occurence of synchronicity.

DK- love the black armband w/the fist concept.
In lieu of an armband, I'll just wear black on the 4th. Blood red does not appeal to me.

Got Dem: blood red doesn't appeal to me either, but with temps of 113 forecast for the 4th here, I doubt I'll be wearing much black, or I really would be red! Have you seen the HST Gonzo fist? It's similar to the black panther raised fist. How unfortunate that the word Gonzo has now been appropriated to mean that torture-humping toady 'Berto. ~~ D.K.
