I don't know if it this could come to pass here locally or if it's just so much "hot air" (pun intended). Final decision will be made by El Paso Electric later this summer.
But I could imagine riding to the top of the 3,000 foot tower would be quite exhilarating (save for batophobics, of course).
Pyramid of Cheops - 449 feet
Sidney Tower - 1,014 feet
Eiffel Tower - 1,063 feet
Empire State Bldg. - 1,473 feet
Solar Tower - 3,281 feet
IF: Temperature (F) outside at ground level = 86 degrees
Temperature (F) at top of tower would = 68 degrees
Temperature (F) at base after heating = 158 degrees
Temperature (F) at top of tower would = 68 degrees
Temperature (F) at base after heating = 158 degrees

I know nothing about the feasbility of this, but the video is slick & I'm glad you put it up! It's about time some major city got serious about solar/wind power. I can't even imagine that ride to the top of the tower. Low-flying aircraft, beware!
ps, did you know you posted this twice, once above the Mother of Invention & once below? Must've been that extra Danish you had for breadfast! ~~ D.K.

deke: Thanks for reminding me about the duplicate copy. That happens when I start a blog and then write another and post it before the first is finished. It's like a stack of pancakes. So the second one down the page was the original and when I copied it up to the top of the heap, I forgot to delete the original. So thank you!
Yeh, that'd be quite a ride up to the top of the tower, wouldn't it? I'm not sure I'd really go. BTW, the solar panel base of this thing is massive and depending on the size of the tower, can take up to a couple square miles of ground!
But that being said, I love that some alternative means of generating electricity are being considered. It seems appropriate for the "Sun City"...after all, Taos has a totally solar-powered radio station.

nice -- hope you-all get this...
i remember reading about this Enviro Mission Solar Tower a bit ago and thinking -- yea -- this technology has to come from overseas...
damn i wish 'we' would start jumping on the alternative energy band-wagon!!
Addendum, or update: El Paso Electric Co. did indeed make a decision as to how it will increase its generation of electricity:
Sadly, it will expand its current natural gas fired plant's capacity. I say sadly because all estimates are we will run out of natural gas before the sun burns out which may leave all of us like the dinosaurs we all thought to be extinct.
But as with this decision, we have now learned a few still walk the earth today -- some in the form of high level executives in control of such things as electric companies.
