Necessity - The Mother of Invention
The recent Virginia Tech shootings have posed a conundrum for many of this nation. US Flags were flown at half-mast afterwards for the 33 students killed a week ago Monday. But the emotional conflict arises from American GI's killed in Iraq and Afghanistan daily without similar recognition from flag standards.
Therefore, Dada is applying for a patent of The Permanent Half-Mast Flag Pole. In that we will be at war for the future - both seeable & unforeseeable - half-mast flag poles will reflect the grief of an eternally sorry nation. It will also eliminate the emotional conflict that results when occasional, tragic domestic losses of civilian life occur like Virginia Tech's which mirror daily deaths among our military gladiators serving in war zones busily building The Empire.
For those who would point out that the shorter half-mast flag poles will make Old Glory less visible to everyone, I would answer that this is an added advantage in that Old Glory has become a symbol of disgrace and is probably better seen, the more invisible it becomes.

sign - tongue in cheek -- you are so right on here....
i visualize peace...now and forever..hugs!
Well, the whole damn govt has been flying at half-mast (or less!) for years, so this is very appropriate. I hate to point this out, but it isn't obvious that a shorter flag pole flag is flying at half-mast ... unless you were saying the flag would then be lowered to half of the new shorter pole ... almost touching the ground ... hmm, perfect. I see a fortune waiting to be made from your patent, esp from consumers such as myself who don't think a symbol of the US means freedom! ~~ D.K.
az: Thanks. Hope you are recovered now -- obviously, you were missedthis past week by your blogsite regulars, moi included.
Welcome back!
raed: Good work! I was aware of the flaw in my design. (Unless, of course, you consider flying a flag a half-mast on a half-mast flag pole would be flying it a quarter-mast (something no one ever does and lives to tell about it)!
Of course, the solution to those who would (which I'd already thought of, but which you did too) was to make the half-mast flag pole a third-mast flag pole (and fly a bigger flag, assuring it would for sure drag on the ground). But that gets into fractions deeper than I ever intended (or did).
Therefore, I am writing the Patent Bureau and withdrawing my application--pending further modifications, of course, or an 8th grade remedial course in fractions. Thanks!
Fractions, schmractions! Don't withdraw your patent app -- no one in the govt understands them either, or we wouldn't find ourselves seriously discussing whether surge means withdrawal. And I still don't understand why a symbol (like a flag) can mean more to people than what the symbol actually stands (or once stood) for. It's just a colored piece of material to me & isn't worth spit as an object to get all bunched up about if it touches the ground. Now what it stands for is something else, but I'm afraid those quaint ideas are only alive in some glass cages at the Smithsonian. ~~ D.K.
Where can I buy stock?
