As most Americans know all too well, for the past several years now, the U.S. Military has been under tremendous stress for lack of sufficient manpower to carry on the global ambitions of the Bush administration. Our military is being stretched to the breaking point.
Insufficient manpower has resulted in GI's Iraq tours of duty being extended beyond their scheduled return dates. Stop losses have been issued extending some soldiers beyond their military ETS dates to an "indefinite" enlistment status. And many soldiers are on their third and fourth tours in that war zone, often returning to Iraq without standard stateside recuperation time.
In light of that, I found president Bush's pronouncements in the rose garden today particularly confusing. Admonishing the democratic congress for failing to deliver to him their war appropriations bill so he can veto it, Bush warned:
"Congress's failure to fund our troops on the front lines will mean that some of our military families could wait longer for their loved ones to return from the front lines. And others could see their loved ones headed back to the war sooner than they need to. That is unacceptable to me, and I believe it is unacceptable to the American people." (..."except when I do it," as Bush failed to add. ~Dada.)
It appears Bush is warning Americans the democrat's actions on the war funding bill may result in the same stresses on the military that Bush has been placing on it for years now. All I am asking is, don't buy this bullshit!

aww, your readers are a lot smarter than you think...we know what comes outta his mouth is bs...
right on, az. I have great readers. It's the 30% or so that still have their heads stuck where sunshine doesn't go that I meant that for.
But, hey, they never come by here, do they?
It's interesting to me that Ol' Hypocrite Drippy Lips said democrats actions may mean
"military families could wait longer for their loved ones to return from the front lines. And others could see their loved ones headed back to the war sooner than they need to. That is unacceptable to me,"....Oh, is it really??!!
on the same day our paper reported Bush's army is sending three large units(7,000 troops) back to the war without giving at least a year stateside.
Ft. Hood's 4th Division has only been home 7 mos. and the 1st brigade out of Ft. Drum, NY has been back 10 1/2 mos. Remember Bush's words, "that's unacceptable to me"
Meanwhile Bush's 25th Inf. Div. out of Hawaii will have their Iraq tours extended a month and 1/2. Again, in Bush's words, "that's unacceptable to me" ... and that's an example of one sanctimonious sumbitch.
I'm back from Las Vegas and a quick trip through Searchlight, Nevada. DK was right. Not much happening there and the big rigs dominate the road to and from Searchlight. Harry Reid is home this week as I saw him on the local LV tv news. When we went through town on Monday the casino at the main intersection was empty but yesterday it was full at noon time -- maybe Reid was doing a town hall meeting or something. The road south out of town is all torn up and will probably be made into a four lane highway. No new homes could be seen and everything seems about the same as it was four or five years ago. Only the traffic has gotten greater.
To add to your post, King George has summarily anointed two more of his right wing nuts to big government jobs while Congess isn't in session: The Ambassador to Belgium, Sam Fox of Swiftboat fame; Susan Dudley, to the OMB; and, Andrew Biggs, to the Social Security Administration, who opposes the Social Security system and says it should be replaced with private accounts. All three couldn't make it through the Senate confirmation process but will serve until January 2009. The damn Dems had better stay in session until January 2009 or we'll have a government completely put together by King George.
Make that three and counting!
eprof2: Yes, those recess appts. keep
Bush busy, don't they? As the slime on the bottom of rocks overturned is revealed, it requires new crony candidates be appointed (vs. nominated/approved by congress) to replace those slimy bastards.
Bypassing congressional approval requires someone on the white house staff stay very, very late on Friday nights, releasing the news to the press just before turning off the lights about midnight or after.
That's okay, it saves congress a lot of time investigating candidates were they to go through the normal procedure of assuming ambassadorships to places like Belgium, the UN, etc. Congress isn't really all the "into" oversight of this president anyway.
This weekend came news of the corruption in the Department of Education where one official has been placed on leave with pay, another asked to resign. Something about conflict of interest with the word "kickbacks" being mentioned. I guess this past Friday night, the last person to leave the white house let that one fly just before turning off the lights on their way out.
(Not to worry, if canned I'm sure their replacements will be announced. Soon, late one Friday night. Preferably while congress is in recess.)
As Molly Ivins quoted Lily Tomlin saying, "No matter how cynical I get, I can never keep up."
Mel! Welcome back! Long time no see. And great quote...and so, so true.
Good to see you back Mel. Guess I'm gonna have to amble over to your blog soon.
