Well, you are certainly in a mood today! What's extremely sad about this picture is that these chickens are the much-vaunted lucky free-range chickens. Their less well-off brethren are stuck in little cages where their feet break off & no one cares. Oh & of course farm named by bushco. ~~ D.K.

Dear raed: You needn't introduce d.j, raed to us as the "clumsy-fingered idiot!" (we're familiar with both raeds. [big grin - J/K!]

And yes, you are right. The photo I chose to use is of "free range" chickens who are free to walk about Nature inside a huge barn with flourescent sunshine.

These are not the others of which you spoke that after viewing way too many photos of I decided NOT to represent. It was just too, too tragic to present on these pages that adhere to a modicum of dignity, even for chickens.

But thanks for pointing it out. A web search for any curious enough can produce ample evidence of mankind's wonderful mass production factory farms.

d,j, raed will not do the web search. Her chicken-hugger mind has all too clear a picture.

From my yrs in the biz, I'll pass along this further torture: experiments show that regular fluorescent light (that is to say the cheap $1/tube kind you find at Home Depot that emit a bright bluish light) causes a whole range of illnesses, mostly headaches, nervous irritability, depression, allergies & mental problems. Some European experiments indicate that as little as 4-hrs exposure per day (most work environments) contributes to brain cancer! We don't do those experiments in amerika & we don't care about chicken headaches or depression.

Those who must spend more time under fluorescent light, should purchase the Full Spectrum kind that run about $12/tube. Chicken "farmers" consider this an unjustified expense. Although one must wonder at that excuse, since natural sunlight would be best & it's free.

BTW, I also worry about the long-term effects of consumers being pushed into replacing their incandescent bulbs with energy-saving CFL's since these are narrow-spectrum types, too. OK, that's your lighting lesson for today! ~~ D.K.
