I'd intended to write my own "op-ed" piece here to commemorate American Laborers we celebrate today in a national holiday. But I don't have to. Why? Because someone far better than I already has. I'm referring to David Sirota's piece in today's San Francisco Chronicle.
Here is but a sample. If you've seen or heard any conservatives out praising American workers on this holiday which celebrates them, please just read the following excerpt from Sirota:
***********
U.S. Education Secretary Rod Paige labeled one "a terrorist organization." Former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, R-Texas, called them "a clear and present danger to the security of the United States." And U.S. Rep. Charles Norwood, R-Ga., claimed they employ "tyranny that Americans are fighting and dying to defeat in Iraq and Afghanistan" and are thus "enemies of freedom and democracy," who show "why we still need the Second Amendment" to defend ourselves with firearms.
***********
And what exactly is Secretary Rod Paige, former house majority leader Tom DeLay and representative Charles Norwood? They're republicans! And who is Paige's "terrorist organization," DeLay's "clear and present danger to the security of the United States" and representative Norwood's "enemies of freedom and democracy" who demands we have firearms to defend ourselves against? Why, they are no more than "labor unions made up of millions of workers -- janitors, teachers, firefighters, police officers," etc, as Sirota reminds us.
People, people, people! Next time you are made fearful with images of swarthy skinned passengers in the plane's rear bathroom mixing dangerous, explosive concoctions of toothpaste, eye liner and after shave, think of American laborers instead. I would suggest to you that these are the true terrorists that represent the real panic and horrors to a certain segment of the American public--our conservative leadership!
To republicans, the terrorists are us, we the people. It is we of the American workforce. And that's whom they are genuinely waging a war against. That's what really--no really!--scares the shit out of 'em.
And it is they who will try to convince you to vote for them in November. It is they who need your votes to continue their agenda to dismantle you and the America you grew up in. It is they who would destroy this nation so that they may eliminate their biggest fears--those whom we celebrate this holiday--American Labor.

In Honor of the Day my son and I watched Good Night and Good Luck...and later we are going to watch REDS.... I was going to write an op-ed piece about POVERTY, but am frankly just too depressed to do it....
( but there is tomorrow ;-)
Great article...puts it all together. The rich have always fought the unions and always will. That is EXACTLY why we need them, and now worse than ever.
So, let's see ... Unions = terrorists, Diplomacy = Appeasement, Democrats = Nazis, Muslims = Fascists. Say, what? We have truly entered bizarro world.
I grew up in a union family with one grandpa in a miner's union, the other in the railroad union, my dad in the bricklayer's union. He maintained union membership all his working yrs, even AFTER he started his own firm. He used to joke about having to get organized & negotiate with mgmt (himself)!
Hey Enigma, I love REDS, but it's such a looong movie, hope you started it early! I always felt bad that Warren Beatty put his whole heart into REDS & it was aced out for Best Movie Academy Award by Chariots of Fire. Now, I also love CofF, but really, it was not in the same league as REDS. D.K.
you are so right - they want us to vote in fear...
and i proclaim we shall NOT!!!
we are an informed public this itme around -- and in two years it will be even better!!
