"Bend over, let me see you shake a tail feather!"

In my ceaseless awe of the New America I wake up in every day, there is an endless stream of surprises that have me excited to leap from bed each morning to learn of the latest from a nation I no longer recognize.

As Bush's republican rubber stamping congress continues their efforts to mercifully put our Bill of Rights out of its misery once and for all by endorsing the president's spying on us to protect us and torturing the shit out of "them," there was a small article this morning left in the kitchen by my wife from yesterday's paper.

I thought I'd share it here in case any of you may have missed it. It's a fine example of the new bravado emerging under the authoritarian Bush reign, yet one that should reassure the Chicken Little boot licking worshippers who are so in need of Bush regime fear mongering to make them feel safer.

"Times wire reports

"Weapons tests on Americans:

"Nonlethal weapons such as high-power microwave devices should be used on American citizens in crowd-control situations before they are used on the battlefield, the Air Force secretary said Tuesday. Domestic use would make it easier to avoid question in the international community over any possible safety concerns, said Secretary Michael Wynne.

" 'If we're not willing to use it here against our fellow citizens, then we should not be willing to use it in a wartime situation,' said Wynne."

keeeryst, so my husband has been somewhat justified in watching The Military Channel "to see what kind of weapons might be used against US" afterall. I don't want to be a guinea pig! We had enough of that back in the 50's-60's with nuke testing, which the govt has only partially acknowledged & paid some token $amt to surviving families. oh & now the locals are talking about how Divine Strake has only been postponed, not tabled, so we may see that little facsimile-nuke tested here in 2007 (pre-iran). Dada, they won't even be stopped with lawsuits this time. They are firm adherents of the "do it now, ask permission later" school. oh & the permission-asking is only proforma for arlen specter, et al. I'd say one hope lies with the soldiers themselves refusing to fire on fellow-citizens, except we are now actively recruiting overseas! The other hope lies with a clean sweep of house, if diebold will allow. ps, i love how you make me think, just don't always love the direction my thoughts flow. D.K.

here's another thought: maybe they think they will be needing extreme military methods of crowd-control because they expect people to take to the streets very soon. somehow this makes me feel better! D.K.

Thank you for posting on this, Dada...I, too, saw an article on this; and it chilled me to the bone.

And make no mistake. This is exactly intended to have precisely that effect. Which is why it's buried in the paper, or available online to those of us looking for it...too chill dissent.

Who do you think they want to use "crowd control" measures on? And do you really believe the military has any interest whatsoever on international opinion? This is an exercise in attempted manipulation of the left. And the scary part is that if we don't get a House in November, it might very well not be an empty threat thereafter.

I bet good folks in Germany during the thirties thought that sooner or later all the nonsense would blow over, and their own government would never...

Yet for myself, I can't give up. I kinda feel like Thelma when she told Louise "I can't go back." Scary as it is, I got to go on...

Freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose!

mel: When it inevitably gets too ugly to think about anymore (which happens most days, some earlier than others), I harken back to the movie "Milagro" and find myself drifting off to a happier place where little people can overcome (if not in the real world, at least in the movie).

I think of scenes like NOLA evacuees being turned back as they tried to cross a bridge to safer ground. Yes, those authorities had the guns and yes, the people, many of them were sick and elderly, yet they far outnumbered the jack booted thugs.

At some point we as a society must wake up and realize we have the numbers, we have the power, despite all their phasors, lasers, and tasers, rubber and lead bullets they can muster.

And yes, fully 1/4 to 1/3 or more of our mushed brained fellow citizens support their extremist pathological out-of-control leadership run amok, but I don't give a shit about them either. Their free to join us, but at present they are part of the problem.

So, what are we going to do when they rig/fix/steal the congressional elections THIS November? (Ahm, that's a potential blog I'm rolling over.) In the meantime, I'm willing to give one more "election" one more chance. But I'm not optimistic that's any longer an avenue that we can go down which leads us to where we need to get this nation.

And, yes, Mel, "Freedom's just another word...." is a manifesto I often hear myself serenading me with these days. And I'm feeling closer and closer to that point every day.

(Oh, you really set me to rambling, huh? ~grin) But back to "Milagro" (Truchas), NM. I really get a great sense of strong willed individualism and independence in that place. I like to think it can be rediscovered in the "lowlands" across America. It gives me hope.
