As testament to the hubris of our war whoring leadership, ask yourself, "How many of those in power, commanding our troops into battle, have made the ultimate sacrifice and laid down their life on a battlefield of war?" I can testify with absolute certainty the answer is, "Not one!" (And that's a real damn shame!) ~ Dada

Didn't Michael Moore say something like that in Farenheit 9/11? He said that only one of the children of all of the senators joined the military and went to Iraq. He also, in the movie, observed that the poor were the majority of the people joining the military.
I'm in the lower middle class, but there is no way in hell that I would join the U.S. Army.
Oh, D.K.-
I have read King's gunslinger series. I was pissed when he decided to end the series the way he did. I feel as if he were looking for a way out. It was one of those horrible Deus ex Machina moments where he wiggled out of the hole he had dug himself into.
And yes, he can stop writing, as his latest novel, Cell, is a total piece of garbage, sad to say.
I enjoyed Bag of Bones and Hearts in Atlantis immensely, though I haven't finished reading The Stand yet. I also really liked Insomnia. That was a wierd little book.
hey, nina, I think you'll like the ending of The Stand MUCH better than Gunslinger. Yes, I know, I felt a little cheated at the conclusion of The Dark Tower, but it had been such a long & enjoyable ride, truthfully I was glad to finally have ANY end. I liked much of the artwork, esp pg 246 in volume 7 paperback, which has to be michael chertoff (weasel-man). And HOW ON EARTH do you understand Deus ex Machina so well? Are they teaching you greek plays at your school?
Yes, dada, sadly none of these rah-rah war-pushers have made ANY sacrifice, let alone the ultimate, on a battlefield. And as nina points out, none of their families are affected either. they feel no remorse over bloodshed as long as it's not theirs. hey, isn't that a classic definition of a sociopath? D.K.
there's a well-timed editorial on this topic here...
today's Boston Globe
D.K.-
Don't worry, the school system hasn't improved at all. No, I just got the Deux ex Machina thing from some book or movie and followed up on it.
maineiac-
I read the Boston Globe article. I agree. I have heard someone influential say (Maybe it was Tim Leary before he died) that if you want to motivate young people against the war, reinstate the draft, and we'll have more war protests than we can handle.
Maineiac! a VERY timely article. Although I believe we already have a draft masquerading as "stop loss". With some soldiers on their 3rd tours, I wonder how many more tours will earn them the coveted "indentured servant" status?
I kind of see Rangel's point about forcing every economic group to do their share. But the wealthy & powerful will always find a way out. Other people's children always do their fighting & dying.
Best line: "Don't dwell on the gruesome, the inane is soon to follow" !!! so sad, so true, stay tuned for Britni "just trust our president" Spears. D.K.
Good article. Thanks Maineiac. And nina you're probably right, my quote of the day was something I probably saw in a Michael Moore movie and just now remembered as my own original, huh?
And re the draft, you're right DK re the stop loss. Or, I'm not sure what you call it, but a friend whose son made it thru three years of army and a tour in Iraq actually was allowed to get out! Been out year, year & 1/2 maybe. But he recently got a notice he was being considered for recall so's he could do another tour in the Big I.
Sadly, he went to talk to a recruiter for 'counseling'. OMG! They convinced him to sign up for the Army Reserve and promised him he wouldn't go to Iraq that way.
Isn't that what the recruiters promised the woman who just deserted up in Eugene?
dJesus, if someone told me I was being considered for the Great Imperial Army of America, I would skip the country. Seriously, that's what I'd do.
By the way, D.K., why don't you just get a blog? It would be cool to see what you would do with one.
nina, are you kidding? That would be too much like "work". I kind of identify with the phrase "those who can't teach, teach P.E." or maybe my brain is too lazy to expand beyond short comments. or maybe because I'm just an idiot with a keyboard. But I do stand in total awe of the tremendous contribution bloggers are making. I really enjoy thinking about things Dada posts. I think a lot of people surf the blogs, reading & moving on. I like to think my "anonymous" comments are representative of that larger audience who reads, but isn't into commmenting. Does that make sense?
ps, is that YOUR spare brain in the jar, exposed for all the world to see, or have you somehow captured enough universal brain waves floating around to form into a kind of collective spare brain? Geez, we better be careful with it, huh. Don't want any "Igor" type accidents. D.K.
nina: I agree, I'd skip the country too. But one thing I won't do. I won't be sweating over this kid's safety, hoping he makes it back home safely day in and day out. (Oh, I hope he does come back ok if resent--don't get me wrong--but if they do send 'im, it's because in trying to AVOID returning to Iraq, he bought the word of an army recruiter hook, line, and sinker. And I thought he was wiser than that.
It's like, in trying to avoid being pushed into the fire, you jump instead. Hey, maybe that's the kids brain there, in your jar?
