SHORT NOTE:

To a few of the regular readers here, I am paused to comment on TV I've thus far seen this evening if only because it is so pertinent to recent subject matter being discussed or hinted at herein.

Immediately after watching the "60 Minutes" segment on the NASA scientist warning of runaway global warming (as taped in front of a NASA observer whose presence was mandated by higher ups in the Bush administration), we stumbled across CNN's program,

"CNN Presents: We Were Warned, Tomorrow's Energy Crisis".

We didn't catch it all, but it repeats at 11:00 EST tonight and 2:00 a.m. EST tomorrow morning. While not having seen it all, from what we saw this evening, I highly recommend this program.

[NOTE: Next year Brazi will, with fuel produced from sugar cane called E-85 (85% ethanol) and FLEX vehicles able to detect the fuel mix and switch its engine to function accordingly, attain energy independence from all imported energy needs, but that's because of steps they took a quarter century ago. America has yet to get serious and start a program towards such independence. It's easy to see where tomorrow's world leading nations may come from.]

Thanks for the alert. I just watched CNN & was stunned into silence. I'm so sorry if I EVER questioned what you were hinting at, Dada. Just awful that our bountiful country cannot do even the slightest preparation for an oil crisis. Who gains by such (in)action, who is willing to risk our future this way? Is it any coincidence our own Prez, VPrez & top govt pols are all big oil guys? Everyone made such fun of Jimmy Carter & the long gas lines in the 70's. If even a minor amt of tax cuts for the wealthy & this illegal war were used to promote alternative energy, is there even time to stave off disaster? I don't know, I'm asking. D.K.

shit, i missed both of 'em because of my distaste for TV in general and i was absolutely fed up with commercial after commercial during the NCAA tournament...in retrospect, Carter was a visionary with his alternative energy plans...too bad he was done in by the horrendous inflation of the late '70's and his alternative energy incentives have been dismantled...if only we (including me) had stuck with him...i remember my first mortgage during that time was at a 14% interest rate and it was a factor behind my vote in the 1980 presidential election...i can't bear to say how i voted, you'll all hate me (but i got better, really i did)

Glad you got to see it, D.K. and sorry you missed it, maineiac. Yeh, D.K., I don't know how or how much these wankers are profiting from all this, but I know it's gonna hit them too in ways they haven't even thought about, so I take some comfort in knowing they're going down with us.

Hey, maineiac, I don't even know what it's a commercial for (I've had the volume down the couple times I've seen it run), but one of the commercials during the tournament shows a "normal" office in total breakdown, total chaos, where everyone's out for their own self interests. It kinda reminds me of a scenario I envision as the result of the end of oil. Total anarchy.

You think, D.K., if maybe we'd had a dictator like Brazil did 25-30 years ago when he decided to make the country energy independent of foreigners, we coulda been in the same boat today?

Oh wait, what the hell am I thinking? Here we are with an authoritarian government and they haven't taken step one in that direction, so scratch the thought.

Also, sorry you missed 60 Minutes maineiac. The visuals of global warmning expert Jim Hansen of NASA appearing with Scott Pelley on the condition that a NASA observer was present to monitor what he said was chilling. The administration/NASA coulda just taped 60 minutes to see what he said, but I suppose a NASA official's presence was more intimidating. Never mind it was a confirmation of the fascism this regime embraces, they obviously don't care and most Americans didn't pick up on it anyway, I'm sure.

BTW, when I just Googled last night's 60 Minutes to verify Jim Hansen's name, you might be interested to know the top entry was an article by some administration's dinosaur shill in which global warming is attributed to Anthropogenic Global Warming alarmists. You gotta give these good ol' boys credit. If they can't refute global warming with their oil company scientists, they'll refute it with their propagandists. (Or sure as hell kill us all trying!)

All in all, it was a good hour and 20 minutes of TV last night.

hahaha, that commercial was another worthless message to "drink more beer" (but responsibly, of course)...the mini-plot centers around a shlub who hides bottles of bud-lite all over the office...chaos and drunken, loutish behavior ensues...

rats, I missed the 60-min NASA guys & that sounded good, too. Nothing like a big brother watching over every damn word. Didn't the old USSR used to send "minders" with comrades who had to travel out in the world (like scientists & olympic contenders) in case they came into too close contact with "democratic" ideas ... also the few tourists who visted there during that era were always accompanied by these "minders". I believe it's the same in China today. Yup, this is how we spread freedom alright, no alternative ideas will be allowed.

And what can "Anthropogenic" mean (in re global warming alarmists)? Anthro meaning man, pogenic meaning from the beginning? Oh, I see, so these global warming alarms are only being generated by man. So in that case, we just ignore anything these alarmists say, not to mention actual scientific facts. Yes, so much easier to have my mind "minded" this way.

Maineiac, don't feel too bad about not voting for Carter. He was toast anyway. He was blamed for the energy crisis, stagflation (remember that?), Iran hostages & even for having large teeth! He lost his base & never got respect from congress. I actually supported Anderson in that election, thinking maybe a 3rd party could offer a better way (I was not similarly duped with Nader I'm glad to say). So, live & learn, no hate from here, really. D.K.

Maineiac: Yeh, I agree with DK. No hard feelings. But still think it's best if you don't reveal who you did vote for in 1980. That way, none of us is sure.

I agree, no sense testing the boundaries of camaraderie (grin)...I got better even after being a newt (hahaha, i kill me)

OMG Maineiac, I don't even know what that last comment means, I think, I hope. (grin)

DK or enigma probably get it, it's a monty python reference (we found a witch, may we burn her?...how do you know she's a witch?...she turned me into a newt..i got better)

Maineiac, I confess I did NOT get it, but now I do! (I had thought you were referring to Newtron-Bomb Gringrich, glad you weren't) So now I see ... another "spam-head"?? D.K.

Dada said...

maineiac: Thanks for explaining the next reference. Like DK, I was leaning towards the ginggrinch interpretation.

But wait. I'm a huge Python fan, yet I confess, that one went way over my head. Like "a bloody penquin on top the telie, silly!"

i love absurd humor, and the obvious ludicrousness of the statement coupled with the look of chagrin that passes over Cleese's face when he realizes what a ridiculous thing he has said is one of those things that will probably stick with me forever...and i must confess there was a double-entendre meant as well...but i'm pushing that envelope again, so enough of all that!
