Boy, oh boy, to I love posting Pat Robertson quotes. Why? Because he pretty well writes the blog for me. No need for explanation, interpretation, or "sexing it up" for entertainment's sake. Robertson is Robertson--compleat, to wit:
”I'd like to say to the good citizens of Dover: if there is a disaster in your area, don't turn to God, you just rejected Him from your city. And don't wonder why He hasn't helped you when problems begin, if they begin. I'm not saying they will, but if they do, just remember, you just voted God out of your city. And if that's the case, don't ask for His help..."
(In last Tuesday's election, Dover, Pennsylvania voters rejected school board members who advocated teaching intelligent design in their schools by removing them.)
So I can just imagine God (via his mouthpiece, Pat Robertson) saying to the residents of Dover, ala Dick Cheney, "Go fuck yourselves." Nice. Real nice, Pat.

It may be good for a laugh-and a cheap thrill to boot- but in my great state of California there is a consistent bloc of voters for whom the image of a fearsome and vindictive God is a major motivator. In fact our governator cynically placed a parental-notification (anti-choice) initiative on our recent ballot in order to get the yahoos out to vote on more substantive issures such as teachers' and firefighters'unions and redisticting. And they did resond. Fortunately, however, there were enough of us who live in the "blue" urban centers to overcome the religious right wingers who live in the (red)exurbs and the terminator may have been terminated. So while we share a good laugh at Robertson and his ilk, the forces of obscuritanism and fanaticism are actually growing in sophistication. Witness the sophistry implicit in the disclaimer that those who are pushing for inclusion of Intelligent Design are not anti-Darwin, but only asking for equal time. (As if you could equate science with dogma and faith.)Parenthetically, consider that our own yahoos call to mind the "Allah is great" fanaticism. An ironic resemblance IMHO.

Chip: Seriously, I appreciate you sticking up for a double-dribbling idiot. But that's not who Robertson is. While Robertson should be just a side show of whom we hear nothing, our media keep him center stage and therein lies the danger as eljoven's comment so nicely points out (and I addressed about a month ago in my post herein "CNN ~ Always the Joker!").
So the analogy I'm bullying some little retarded klutzy kid on the playground is a difficult swallow. I'm not worth millions (influence) nor an extremist Christian fanatic (hate) with my own television network enabling me to influence million of other idiots. Nor do I approve or appreciate the validation media give our "idiot", but that's the society we've become.
We're a nation of side-show distractions, annoyances from the margins, who now occupy the spotlight. Hence we have guys like Bill O'Reilly endorsing an Al Qaeda attack on San Francisco. (The list is long, to include many in our government, I fear.)
Hey, that reminds me, think I'll amble down the beach and kick some sand in O'Reilly's face next.
Making fun of Pat is like calling a retarded kid for double dribbing in basketball.
If that retarded kid has a microphone and lots of mindless followers - I say go for it.
