I must admit it's getting better

I gotta say, I'm so impressed with technology and, every so often, I'm impressed again, only even more. Or maybe I should say, I'm awestruck at the people who use technology in new and creative ways. Like last night.

While dining with friends at our favorite Italian restaurant, there was the usual amount of cell phones in use at tables around the room. The owner was even walking about on an inexpensive wireless GE.

Now while I have my own cell phone, it never rings. No one knows its number. But during dinner, I observed what to me was a new phenomenon. A couple at the table next to us was carrying on a three way, a technological ménage à trois! They were using a walkie talkie!

I was so awed and impressed. Not only could we hear the comments of both our neighbor's at the next table, we could hear their third party's responses to them!

I know walkie talkies have a limited range. And I confess to actually getting derailed a time or two from the conversation at our table by the conversation at their table. Because of this, I confess to the temptation to go over and politely suggest that, being within a mile or two of their 'walker talker' friend, maybe they should just get up and drive over there. But I chomped my bit.

The real stunner came as this other party got up to leave. On their way out, they crossed the room to visit with -- of all people -- yes, their walkie talkie friend(s)! I was so simultaneously awed, and inspired. Next stop Radio Shack!!

Okay, that's the ultimate in annoying use of wireless technology!

Cell phones are in such constant use here, we can't buy groceries without literally bumping into people roaming the aisles with cell phones held to their ears. They don't watch where they're going so we now have to shop defensively (one eye on the broccoli and one eye on the shopper headed our way with the cell phone in hand).
