Today's editorial page cartoon, or what's so damn funny??!!

Some cartoonists really hit the nail on the head, i.e., they make a point and us laugh at the same time. But either I or this cartoonist are not the sharpest tack in the room, lying on the floor, pointy end up. That's because....

I didn't get this one. I mean, what do our embattled troops in the middle-east have anything to do with our *obligation or duty* as citizens to vote? Is that the implication of why they're fighting the Taliban in Afghanistan? Or Al Qaeda? Or killing innocent men, women and children there?  That they, our troops, are defending our freedom to vote?

Or is this supposed to be some quest on our soldier's parts to get them back home from some hopeless, bogus political (read *economic*) war?

As the '08 election has shown, that obviously doesn't work. Sorry, keep up the good fight and "Soldier on!" troops.

(NOTE: Any explanations to help me understand why today's cartoon is funny are welcomed.)
